Travelling with a baby can come with it's own challenges but a visit to Berlin can be a wonderful experience for both you and your baby. Here are my tips on how to keep your baby entertained during your time in this fabulous city, whilst also getting to see the sights at the same time.
is Look around Alexanderplatz
For many visitors coming to Berlin, Alexanderplatz is a must-see area of the city. With it's famous TV Tower (Fernsehturm) standing overhead, the old East Berlin water fountain in the square (that can be spotted in the popular German film 'Goodbye Lenin') and the Neptune Fountain (Neptunbrunnen), it's a great place to head to if you are visiting for the first time. Head over to the World Clock to check out what time it is around the world, take a trip up the TV tower if you get a chance and if you get stuck with a dirty nappy (diaper), the large shop 'Galeria' in the center of the square has baby changing facilities on the floor where the kids clothes are sold. There are events and traditional German markets held at various times per year on Alexanderplatz with a number being aimed at children.
Wander through Hackesher Markt
Just down the road from Alexanderplatz (it's a nice little walk between stations so no need to get the train) is Hackesher Markt. This thriving area is home to a weekly market, lots of shops, the odd bubble blower (perfect for keeping baby's attention) and the famous Hackesher Hoefe. This is a collection of courtyards, a short distance from the Hackesher Markt S Bahn station, and is home to a number of little shops, a cute little water fountain and lots of safe areas to explore for early walkers. It can get busy down here but it's a nice place to relax in during your visit.
Brunch like the Berliners!
If you want to experience a bit of the famous Berlin lifestyle, why not brunch like the Berliners. Sundays in Berlin are famous for their brunches and there are lots of family-friendly options available. Here is a list of family-friendly brunches in Berlin.
Hang with the Peacocks
One of the reasons Berlin is such an amazing city is the sometimes bizarre options this place has for spending your days. If your little one loves animals and you enjoy walking through nature and discovering old buildings, head to Peacock Island. The name isn't pointless, it does indeed house peacocks and a few roam freely, a sure delight for any curious baby.
Bells, water & architecture by The Reichstag
Perfect for the Berlin Spring and Summer months, right near The Reichstag you can find some fabulous water fountains to touch and wander through. Baby hands will love playing with the shooting water and those on their feet may want to stand in it. Also, you get to look at the strange mix of hyper modern and old buildings surrounding you with Berlin's Hauptbahnhof, the various political buildings, The Reichstag and The Carillon all within view. Here's more info on visiting The Reichstag with a baby.
