When something goes wrong. When your child falls ill and the doctors are closed and you don't know what is wrong, it can be horrifying. Being in another country can make this all the harder. Here is a list of emergency numbers and addresses for options available to you should you find your child fall ill or have a serious accident whether during or outside of normal doctor's opening hours.
If Your child’s life is in danger: Call 112

If you suspect poisoning contact the: Berliner Giftnotruf: 030 19240

Finding an Apotheke that's open on a Sunday

The Apotheke's are generally closed on Sundays, however each district (Bezirk) of Berlin will have one Apotheke open for 'Notdienst' on a Sunday. The apotheke's take it in turns to open and you can easily find out which Apotheke in your area is open here. Enter the date and find your area under 'Bezirk', then click 'Notdienste im ausgewählten Bezirk anzeigen' to see which one will be open in your area.

You don't have a paediatrician but need to see one with your child
Whether you are just visiting Berlin with your child(ten) or live in the city but haven't yet had the chance to find a paediatrician and need to see one, don't worry, you still can. You can turn up to a paediatrician's office in their opening hours with your child and explain your situation and you will be seen. Of course you may well expect a long waiting time, depending on the type of illness presenting. I have a list of recommended English speaking paediatricians in Berlin.

Who to contact outside of paediatrician opening hours:

If you believe your child has an illness that needs medical assistance but want a second opinion before leaving home, you can call the Kinderärztlichen Bereitschaftsdienst der Kassenärztlichen Vereinigung. You can explain the symptoms and they can advice you as to whether or not to take your child to a hospital and, in some cases, can organise for a paediatrician to come to you. Call them at 030 31 00 31

Hospitals that take have children's emergency rooms

If you will be taking a taxi to the hospital, make sure to ask to be taken to either the 'Kinderrettungsstelle' or 'Kinderstation'. The Berlin taxi firm I always use can be contacted at 030 20 20 20.

Dear Sarah, thanks for this list! Would you consider starting one on English-speaking pediatric dentists?

Hi there - just a suggestion for an addition to this page:

There is a central phone number for out-of-hours health problems short of emergencies that require an ambulance/ER: just dial 116 117.

Medically trained staff can assess the situation and advise on how to proceed, e.g. where the nearest out-of-hours medical practice is (often in a hospital).
