If you don't yet know the Bergmannkiez ('Kiez' is a term given to a small community/neighbourhood within the city) than it may well be time you give it a visit. Set in Kreuzberg, this area is a mixture of a busy street filled with eateries and those enjoying them and small streets that are reminiscent of other countries and sometimes very un-Berlin. The area also hosts a popular weekend market which sells a mixture of household items, vintage pieces, some new clothing and a good selection of secondhand toys and Lego!

The market takes place on a Saturday and Sunday and the better the weather, the more stands you tend to find there. We picked up some old board games, Lego characters and a few English language books whilst there and have our eyes on a few other pieces. A mixture of regular locals, visitors from other parts of the city and tourists mill around and we heard a number of languages spoken among those wandering between the stalls.

In the middle of of Marheineplatz, where the market takes place, you can find a playground for the kids to climb and clamber on (this is less a playground for babies and younger toddlers, who could make use of the sand but not the larger climbing parts) and there it's generally just nice to stroll around the neighbourhood.

Next to the outdoor market, you can find a large food hall called Marheineke Markthalle, where you can find stalls selling fresh fish, meats, cheeses, sausages, breads and vegetables, as well as, lunches and other items such as a key cutters, toy shop, florist etc. The area is also not far from Viktoria Park, which is worth checking out if you haven't already. Hasenheide Park in Neukoelln is also not too far away and you can find the 1001 Nights Playground as well as the animals in the small animal section in the middle of the park and this other playground.
