The Neukoelln neighbourhood of Berlin has changed greatly in the many years I've lived here and I am very proud to call it home. Project Klunkerkranich is one of many reasons that I love my area. Located on the top of an otherwise dull parking lot, above the Neukoelln Arcarden, this place is a community garden, cafe, hangout for families, hipsters, tourists and locals, a great place to get a view across this wonderful city and much more.
There is free entry to the space before 4pm, where you can play in the sandpit, check out the plants and herbs being grown in the garden, eat or drink something from the cafe or just generally hang out and enjoy the view. There is lots of seating, some shade and in the evenings, the place turns in to a venue with live events, music, dancing and of course drinking.
I took my family there for a visit this last weekend and my oldest loved playing in the many crooks and crevices to be found. You can even take a family picture in the photo booth. To get there, take one of the lifts up to the 5th floor and then follow the sign pointing to the Klunkerkranich. You follow a twisting wall, filled with plants in pots, up to the 6th floor (the lift won't take you to the floor directly so don't get confused when the button for floor 6 doesn't work) and there you will be faced with this little oasis.
It's a delightful space with the odd beautiful imperfection and we felt just as at home with kids as the many others visiting that day. If you want to see another side to this wonderfully creative district, come and check it out.
